How to speed up a slow Squarespace site
Most slow Squarespace sites improve when you reduce page weight, compress oversized images, trim unused scripts, limit fonts, and simplify heavy pages. Start with the heaviest page first, then test again before changing anything more technical.
If your Squarespace site feels slow, the first things to check are page size, image weight, script count, and block count. Squarespace’s own guide to reducing page size for faster loading is straightforward: keep pages around 5 MB or less when possible, keep images under about 500 KB — see formatting images for the web — avoid more than 60 blocks per page, and trim anything loading extra code in the browser.
That usually fixes more than any “speed hack.” Slowdowns often come from design decisions: too many large images, too many fonts, too many redirects, or too many external widgets.
How to do it in Squarespace 7.0 vs 7.1
On both versions, start by checking the worst page instead of the whole site. Compress and resize images before uploading, split oversized pages into smaller pages, and remove widgets or scripts that are not earning their keep.
In 7.1, section-heavy pages can get bulky fast, so watch block count and long scrolling layouts. In 7.0, older stacked pages and legacy template behaviors can also get heavy, especially on media-rich pages. Squarespace’s older guidance also mentions Ajax loading for some 7.0 templates.
When you need a plugin / what solves this easier
A plugin is rarely the first speed fix. In fact, browser-side tools can make things slower if they load too many items or too many scripts.
Where a Squarewebsites product is honestly relevant: if you are using Summary Blocks plus filters, keep the source content organized and do not try to brute-force huge collections into one page. Common gotchas
- A single oversized homepage banner can do more damage than several small design tweaks.
- Too many fonts slow sites down; two fonts is a reasonable ceiling for most sites.
- Redirect chains add latency, especially on mobile.
- Custom code, chat widgets, review widgets, and analytics scripts are common hidden causes.
- Test speed again after each change so you know what actually moved the needle.
