Squarespace SEO & AEO for Designers
What is AEO (answer engine optimization) for Squarespace?
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of optimizing content so AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity can discover, parse, and cite it. For a Squarespace site it means writing direct answers, adding structured data via JSON-LD, keeping content crawlable as plain HTML, publishing an llms.txt file, and building topical authority. AEO extends traditional SEO rather than replacing it.
How AEO differs from SEO
Traditional SEO targets the list of blue links in a search results page. AEO targets the synthesized answer that an AI engine produces at the top of the response. The underlying requirements overlap heavily — crawlability, structured data, and authority matter to both — but AEO adds emphasis on content that is directly quotable: short, self-contained answers that an AI can extract and cite (Google Search Central).
What AEO means on Squarespace specifically
Squarespace’s server-rendered templates already give you crawlable HTML, which is a good AEO foundation. The work you add on top:
- Direct-answer sections — answer the page’s question in the first paragraph.
- Structured data — add FAQPage, Article, or Organization JSON-LD via Code Injection (schema.org).
- llms.txt — a root-level plain-text file pointing AI crawlers to your best content.
- Topical depth — cover a subject across several linked pages so your domain reads as authoritative.
What Squarespace does not give you out of the box
Squarespace does not auto-generate an llms.txt file or offer a native structured-data editor beyond the schema it outputs by default. Both require manual work through Code Injection or linked files, and Code Injection itself needs a Business plan or higher (Squarewebsites).
