What content gets lost when migrating from Squarespace 7.0 to 7.1?
Because 7.0 to 7.1 is a rebuild rather than an auto-upgrade, content tied to a specific 7.0 template structure may not transfer cleanly and typically needs rebuilding on 7.1. The Squarewebsites Chrome extension copies pages, sections, and collections directly, which reduces loss, but template-dependent features and some 7.0-only layouts may still need manual re-creation.
Why some content is at risk
Squarespace 7.0 is template-based with per-template structures, while 7.1 uses a unified template system where all templates share one core (Squarespace platform facts). Because the two versions are architecturally different, anything that depends on a 7.0 template’s unique structure — such as Index page layouts, specific 7.0-only blocks, or developer-mode customizations — may not have a direct equivalent on 7.1.
What the Chrome extension preserves
The extension copies pages, sections, and collections (Blog, Product, Gallery, Album, Events, and Custom collections) between sites in a few clicks, and it imports and exports content along with page styling (Squarewebsites). This means your standard page content, blocks, and collection items can be carried over rather than rebuilt from scratch.
What to check manually
- Template-specific 7.0 layouts (for example, certain Index or Gallery arrangements) that rely on that template’s structure. which 7.0 layouts have no 7.1 equivalent.
- Custom CSS and any developer-mode code, since 7.0 developer mode is not carried into 7.1 (Squarespace platform facts).
- Per-template style tweaks that map differently in the 7.1 design panel.
Back up the source 7.0 site before migrating and review the destination page by page so anything that did not transfer can be rebuilt on 7.1.
